Center Focus

What Adds Up to 10?

  1. You will need several sets of 2-sided counters for this activity. If you don't have them already, you can make your own using lima beans. Simply paint each side of the beans a different color or pattern.
  2. Your students will shake the counters in their hands (or a cup) and empty them onto the center work table. Some will land on one side and some on the other and these two numbers will ad up to 10.
  3. They will record the numbers as addition problems (i.e. 7+3=10) in order to find all of the different ways to make 10.
  4. You may want to have a recording sheet prepared for your students depending on their ability level.
