Number of Turkeys

According to the National Turkey Federation, in 2000, 267 million turkeys were raised, with about 45 million of those being eaten at Thanksgiving. The average weight of a turkey is 15 pounds. Have your students compute how many pounds of turkey will be consumed at Thanksgiving. An estimated 92% of Americans eat turkey for Thanksgiving. Based on the current population, have your class figure out how many pounds each person consumes and what portion of an average size turkey that amount equals (i.e. one quarter, half).
